About the Role<\/h3>\n

The International Law Support Unit (ILSU) is seeking a motivated law student or recent law graduate to join the team for a 12-week, part-time internship. The intern will contribute to ILSU\u2019s ongoing legal and programme work through legal research, analysis, and drafting on international law, human rights, transitional justice, access to justice, and rule of law issues, with a particular focus on the Syrian context.<\/span><\/p>\n

Working closely with the Legal Officer and wider ILSU team, the intern will gain practical experience contributing to legal memoranda, research notes, submissions to UN bodies, and other programme outputs, while supporting the Unit\u2019s broader workstreams and activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Key Responsibilities<\/h3>\n

The intern will be integrated into the Unit\u2019s ongoing workstreams and contribute across the following areas:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant topics and prepare legal memoranda, internal briefs, and research notes.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Support the drafting and preparation of written submissions to UN bodies, including Working Groups, Treaty Bodies, and Special Rapporteurs.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Conduct desk-based research and monitor key justice and rule of law developments within the transition.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Support programme work across thematic areas, including:<\/span>\n
      \n
    • Guarantees of non-recurrence in relation to deprivation of liberty, arbitrary detention, torture, and enforced disappearance.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Protection of key political and civil rights concerning political and public participation, including freedom of assembly, opinion and expression, and association.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Access to justice and effective remedy, including rule of law and judicial independence.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Transitional justice and the search for the missing.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Public international law.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Conduct ad hoc legal research and analysis as required by active workstreams.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Assist with administrative and programme-related tasks as required, including preparing slide decks, drafting templates, and creating forms or tracking tools.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Requirements<\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Currently enrolled law student or recent law graduate.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Working knowledge of\u00a0<\/span>international law<\/b>, particularly:<\/span>\n
          \n
        • International Human Rights Law\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • International Humanitarian Law<\/span><\/li>\n
        • International Criminal Law<\/span><\/li>\n
        • International Environmental Law\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Strong legal research and writing skills, with the ability to synthesise complex materials into clear and concise analysis.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Ability to work diligently and independently, manage deadlines, and collaborate with colleagues across different time zones.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)<\/h3>\n
            \n
          • Familiarity with the Syrian context or other post-conflict, or transitional settings.<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Arabic language<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Working knowledge of Syrian law, as relevant to thematic areas of work (as provided above)<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Syria-based, preferably Damascus (home-based with expenses covered for any possible travel).<\/span>
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Communication:<\/h3>\n

              The Legal Officer will check in with the intern weekly or twice a week (as needed) on Google Meets. Communications through WhatsApp and email shall also be used regularly as needed. The intern\u2019s communication and scheduling needs will be accommodated.<\/span><\/p>\n
