Part-Time Investigations Officer
Background
SLDP is seeking a part-time Investigations Officer to assist in executing Human Rights and Business Unit (HRBU) projects and activities in Syria. The role focuses on investigating potential business-related human rights abuses while building networks, collecting data, and contributing to transparency and accountability in the Syrian context.
About us:
SLDP is a Syrian non-governmental organization with specific expertise in international law issues arising from the Syrian context.
SLDP has two units. The International Law Support Unit (ILSU), with a mandate of equipping Syrian NGOs, including victims’ and women-led organizations, with self-sufficient capacity in international law to conduct their efforts and accomplish their mission in fighting impunity, including in creative ways. The Human Rights and Business Unit (HRBU), with a mandate to create initiatives and increase the ability of stakeholders, including SNGOs, state actors and INGOs, to influence and use alternative forms of accountability against perpetrators of corporate-related human rights abuses in the Syrian conflict.
Scope of Work
This is a part time position to To assist in executing SLDP Human Rights and Business Unit (HRBU) projects and activities in Syria including investigating possible business abuses of human rights. This position is located in Syria only.
About the role:
Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough investigations on assigned topics
- Build a network of credible sources including whistleblowers, experts, and businesses to support the investigations and the wider understanding of business possible abuses of human rights in Syria
- Seek access to official documents in government departments or private businesses when possible to support investigations.
- Collect and analyze data, public records, and other relevant materials to support investigations.
- Draft investigative reports and collaborate with other team members.
- Handle sensitive information and sources with discretion, following established ethics and confidentiality protocols.
- Any administrative work that may be required to fulfil the execution of the above tasks
Contract Term: Part time 12 Months Fixed Term, Subject to be renewal
Work Location: based in Syria, frequent travel within the country required.
Reports to: Senior Researcher

The role involves providing expertise in international and Syrian law to support justice actors, contributing to organizational strategies, and advancing the rule of law and human rights in the Syrian context.

Responsibilities: Research and Advisory:
- Conduct and contribute to research on international legal issues related to the Syrian conflict.
- Develop legal papers addressing international law and its application to the Syrian context.
- Analyze Syrian national laws from an international legal perspective to support justice actors.
Capacity Building:
- Plan, design, and deliver training and technical assistance focused on international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law.
- Build and strengthen relationships with Syrian justice actors and identify opportunities for collaboration.
Strategy and Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of unit activities, engagements, and achievements.
- Contribute to organizational strategies and reporting commitments.
- Provide ad-hoc legal consultations aligned with the unit’s strategies and partners’ needs.
Duties / Responsibilities ( Individual duties and Team Management Duties):
- Contributing to and conducting legal research and developing legal papers on international legal issues that arise in the context of the Syrian conflict and transition proactively and reactively.
- Analysing Syrian national laws and regulations from an international law lens in the context of supporting Syrian justice actors’ and duty bearers’ work to advance human rights and the rule of law in Syria
- Overall, serving as a Syrian law expert within the Unit’s work and strategies and SLDP
- Providing ad-hoc legal consultations to Syrian justice actors on International Law in accordance with the legal requests of partners and the Unit’s strategies
- Planning, designing, and providing capacity-building and technical assistance to Syrian justice actors on issues pertaining to international law, with a focus on international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and relevant areas of international criminal law
- Developing and strengthening networks with Syrian justice actors, identifying opportunities for collaboration
- Keeping a good record of the Unit’s work, engagements, and achievements and contributing to SLDP’s reporting commitments.

Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate should have the following competencies:
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Law.
Experience:
- 3-5 years experience in working on human rights, international law, or broader justice-related issues
- Advanced knowledge and experience in working in the Syrian context is required
- Experience in developing and delivering capacity-building activities is required
- Experience working on issues related to legal reforms, transitional justice or constitutional reforms is an advantage/preferred
